Social Skills Coaching Fee Schedule

Posted by Wendy  Published in Social Skills Coaching

Initial Consultation Appointment – $85.00 one time only.

This first time appointment will be scheduled for up to an hour-and-a-half.  To this appointment, the individual will bring their filled-out New Client forms, previously emailed to them.

This appointment is a time when the individual becomes familiar with Wendy, and the Social Skills Coaching she provides, and Wendy becomes familiar with the individual’s social abilities and challenges.

Individualized One-on-One Sessions – $72.00 per hour ($40.00/half hour):

These individualized one-on-one sessions continue after the initial consultation.

For these sessions, Wendy creates a curriculum designed to address the social challenges discussed during the client’s initial consultation.  In each session, various learning strategies are used, including reading and discussing prepared role-playing scripts and directed social-skills practice.

Social Homework

Social skills practice homework will be given at the end of every session.  This homework provides the client with the opportunity to practice the social skills they’ve learned in everyday situations.

If the individual session is held virtually, the practice homework will be emailed to the client, for them to print it before the session.

Please don’t let pricing stop you from acquiring the skills you need.
I offer reduced rates without income verification.

Transitioning to Adulthood

Posted by Wendy  Published in Social Skills Coaching

Transitioning to adulthood is a challenging process for everyone.  Making this transition may be especially difficult for people on the autism spectrum who are frequently challenged by change and often struggle with social relationships.

If you go to college, there are many social lessons you will need to learn, in addition to focusing on your academic studies.  Similarly, if you are seeking employment, there are many life skills and interpersonal skills you will need to master, in addition to training for your new job.  Moreover, both of these transitions involve learning to live independently.

Becoming an adult requires developing essential life skills such as scheduling your time, money management, and learning to care for yourself.  I offer personalized strategies and support to ease this difficult transition process into adulthood.

These strategies can include:

•  How to interact with bosses, coworkers, and customers appropriately, including understanding the untold rules in a workplace environment.

•  How to make the transition to college life a successful one. These skills include: organizational skills, time management skills, and self advocacy skills.

•  How to live as an independent adult, including how to take care of yourself physically, emotionally, financially, and socially.

•  How to live independently in a dormitory, an apartment, or an individual residence, including detailed instructions for understanding your responsibilities.

•  How to develop and maintain friendships, including understanding the complexities of dating and creating intimate relationships with members of the opposite sex.

I provide coaching in my therapeutic training office, as well as on-site observation that can take place at a local school or workplace.  I also provide coaching and support by phone, email, and Skype.

As with all of my coaching, it is my goal to empower my clients with techniques to manage the demands of daily adult living.  I provide my clients with the skills and support they need to succeed in college, in the workplace, and in life.

The Tools I Use to Supplement Instruction

Posted by Wendy  Published in Social Skills Coaching

When you walk into my therapeutic training room, the first thing you will notice is that it is not a typical office.

You’ll note that I intentionally have my furry assistant, my certified Therapy Dog, present in my office for the purpose of coaching the importance of acknowledging what is within your immediate environment.

I have mirrors mounted in different directions, so that you can observe their body language and facial expressions while you practice non-verbal skills for successful social interactions with others.

When instructing on using socially appropriate tone or volume of voice with others, if you need additional feedback for how others are hearing you, one tool that I use is to record your voice so you can hear yourself to be aware of how others are hearing you.  When you adjust your voice tonality or volume, you can be socially more successful with others.

I also utilize YouTube videos as visual teaching strategies to help you read others non-verbal body language.   I do this by turning the video volume off so that you can focus on the non-verbal communication messages of the actors.  I use videos as a visual supplement to my verbal skill instruction.

These are a few examples of some of the “tools” that I have in my coaching “toolbox”.

Private Training & Public Practice

Posted by Wendy  Published in Social Skills Coaching

While social skills lessons begin in my office, client session appointments can also take place in the public setting for skill practice as a client needs.  One example is that I offer support to clients via a cell phone call as they participate in a social situation, practicing their new social skills in public.

Another public social skill practice strategy that I use with clients in the community is to practice “People Watching.”  My client and I will observe other people’s body language and facial expressions in various public social situations, so that my client can practice reading others’ non-verbal body language.

Research shows that individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Asperers, ADHD, ADD, Social Anxiety and those with learning differences acquire social skills most easily through Experiential Learning, rather than instruction only received in an office setting.

Coaching Isn’t Therapy

Posted by Wendy  Published in Social Skills Coaching

Social skills coaching is a unique and valuable form of interpersonal training that is different from talk therapy.

There is an assumption in traditional therapy that the answers to social problems lie within the patient and that if you do enough therapizing, the person will eventually find the answer.  People with developmental and social disabilities like autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, and social anxiety, however, frequently do not know the answers to social situations, and so therapy is often not an effective method of teaching them how to interrelate.  I teach teens and adults with special needs how to navigate social situations so they can interact appropriately as they gain more social confidence.

I created a Non-Clinical Agreement that lets my clients know that I do social skills coaching, not therapy.  Sometimes clients ask me, “While I’m here, can we talk about my relationship with my mom?”  I can certainly refer you to someone who does do that, but my expertise is in teaching adults the social tools they need to understand how to have relationships with the many different people in their lives.

The work I do is practical and hands on; it is not theoretical.  Everything I teach can be put into practice right away.  My skill is in decoding the way that people act in typical social situations, and teaching my clients how to understand and emulate that behavior.
